Ecological City TranspOrt System

is a European Union project initiative to test three Citaro fuel cell buses in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The overall objective of ECTOS is to implement a demonstration of state-of-the-art hydrogen technology by running part of the public transport system with fuel cell busses within Reykjavík, Iceland. The energy chain will be next to CO2 free, because domestic geothermal and hydro-powered energy sources will be used to produce hydrogen by electrolysis. The main research objectives concern the socio-economic factors involved in changing the energy base of a modern urban society. ECTOS was launched 1st March 2000 but the preparation phase of the project will take 2 years before the hydrogen fuel cell buses arrive. Parallel to the Technical tests there will be several studies on socio-environemental parameters. The project will run parallel in Reykjavík with the CUTE project and communication will be kept open between the two.
